About Sheriff Michael Poulin
Sheriff Michael Poulin has been a Muskegon County resident for over 45 years. He and his wife Susan Sanborn-Poulin have been married for 28 years. They have two sons: Gavin and Garrett. Sheriff Poulin has demonstrated his ability to successfully manage all aspects of the Muskegon County Sheriff's Office, including implementing policy; selection, managing and training staff; developing and managing departmental budgets and leading cross-functional units. In 2019, Sheriff Poulin was appointed by Governor Whitmer to serve on the Governor's Traffic Safety Advisory Commission. Sheriff Poulin has also been selected as a member of the State of Michigan, School Safety Grant Committee and the Michigan Motorcycle Safety Action Team. Since 2021, Sheriff Poulin has served on the Michigan Sheriff's Association Board of Directors.
Sheriff Poulin is a graduate of Grand Valley State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Sheriff Poulin is also a graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety; Police Staff and Command and Executive Management Program, where he earned the “Public Safety Executive Leadership Award” from Northwestern University. In 2012 Sheriff Poulin graduated from the FBI National Academy, Quantico VA.
Sheriff Poulin has participated with the United Nations Development Program and the State of Kuwait, in support of implementing a “National and Integrated Traffic and Transportation Strategy”. Sheriff Poulin has helped to build designated crash investigation units as well as assisting in the establishment of Kuwait’s National Traffic Safety Guidelines. In November of 2018, Sheriff Poulin travelled to Doha, Qatar and presented at an International Traffic Safety Conference, assisting that country with preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Soccer Tournament.
